About us

This Research Training Group brings together junior researchers from biology, chemistry and physics, who work in the emerging field of Synthetic Biology. It provides an innovative, integrated and international PhD training program. Funded by the DFG, the Research Training Group is a joint initiative by leading scientists from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich as well as from the Technical University Munich (TUM) and the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry.

Projects range from the development of synthetic proteins, to synthetic switches as well as artificial cells and even the creation of cell free synthetic-biological systems. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the intricate functionality of cells, organisms and even ecosystems and thus contribute to the analysis and treatment of complex diseases as well as to the development of novel biotechnological processes. What we offer

The GRK2062 will foster close collaborations between junior researchers from biology, chemistry and physics. The qualification concept is based on a modern credit point-based education and support program that combines mandatory and optional activities. Core elements are practical and theoretical workshops and a lab exchange program to facilitate interdisciplinary projects. Students will be able to individualize their curriculum according to their project requirements and personal needs. Additionally, GRK2062 doctoral students and postdocs have the opportunity to apply for several types of funding in order to support their scientific career (start-up funding, travel support, gender equality funds, publication funds, funds for guests).

What we expect

If you would like to apply to the PhD programme at the GRK2062 please take note of the following requirements:

Applicants to the PhD programme are required to hold either a master's degree, a diploma or a four year bachelor's degree (with written thesis) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, chemistry, physics or in a related discipline. Further details about requirements can be found in the description of the respective project.

All courses, lectures and seminars at the GRK2062 are held in English. Thus, selected candidates have to be fluent in written and spoken English and have to document their proficiency in English. Therefore, a "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (TOEFL) or a test by the "International English Language Testing System" (IELTS) is strongly advised. You do not need one of these tests if

  • you are a native speaker of English or
  • your entire education has been in English or
  • you have studied at least six months at an English-speaking school or university or
  • you can prove your proficiency in another way (for example, through your German "Abitur" results)

For your application, two letters of recommendation (e.g. from your Master or Bachelor supervisor) are required. Additionally we expect

  • strong scientific motivation
  • interest in the activities of the doctoral programme

Applications will be independently reviewed by the Recruitment Committee of the GRK2062. Based on academic qualification, research experience, motivation, scientific background and the letters of recommendation and results of Skype interviews candidates will be selected for personal interviews in Munich.

Please note: Degrees of applicants from foreign countries will have to be approved by the admissions and registration office of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich.
